Google Adsense Definitions Guide

These are some definitions guide to Google’s Adsense contextual advertising program from bloggingblog.net. Hopefully you will understand some basics before trying to use Adsense. And of course can increase your earning if you already had one.

How Adsense works
Adsense reads the text on the page, and decides what the page is about. Then it looks in its ad database and shows ads that are, hopefully, relevant. The idea is that your reader may see something useful in the Adsense block, and click it –thus earning you a commission, and the advertiser a new potential customer.

Stay on topic
Nothing confuses Adsense more than bouncing around between topics. If you have a habit of doing this, then Adsense won’t know what ads to serve. You will see nor-relevant, unrelated ads or your site. This is bad, because no one will click or your ads, and you won’t earn any money. Stay on topic so Adsense can serve relevant ads.

Blend your ads
Nothing is worse than ads that stick out – they’re an eyesore. You want to be careful when designing your ads, to make sun they don’t stick out. Make the background and border colors the same as your page background. You also need to make the text and URL color the same as your text, and the Title the same color as your links. This way the ad block will flow with your site design, instead of taking away from it. Your CTR (click through rate) and earnings will also
increase.

Adsense Ad positioning
It’s important to position your ads correctly, so they get the most exposure. After all, if no one sees your ads way dour at the bottom of the page, no one will click them. Ads should always the placed “above the fold”, or in the reader’s view without the need to scroll. Ads placed within or ever before the content do better than ads placed at the end of the content.

Use Link units
Link units are small and unobtrusive, and are easily integrated into nearly any site design. Horizontal link units tend to do very well near the top of the page. They often appear to be navigation menus. Every site should incorporate one link unit.

Use multiple ad units
You always want to have an Adsense block in front of your reader’s eyes. Therefore, it’s especially important to use multiple ad units on each page, if your pages are long. Be careful though – you don’t wait your site to appear cluttered with ads –it is an instant turn off for readers. While more is usually better, it is not always better.

Choosing your ad sizes
Some ad sizes perform better than others. Traditionally, the Large rectangle (336×280) and the Wide skyscraper (160×600) are among the best performing block sizes. You should start with these and make adjustments as needed.

Use Adsense for search
If your site includes a search box of any kind, replace it with an Adsense search box. Your user gets the same benefit of searching your site easily for information, and you get the benefit of displaying Adsense ads on the search result pages.

Choose your topic carefully
Not all Adsense ads pay equally. Something to consider is this – you get paid based on what the advertiser bids for the ad. It stands to reason that more profitable niches will pay more than less profitable niches. Further, you can reasonably expect that ads for lawyer services will pay more than ads for hamster food.

Also, when choosing your topic, consider traffic. A site dedicated entirely to hamster food is not likely to draw a significant amount of traffic, so you may have trouble making any money.

Experiment
This entire article, and indeed every article about Adsense, is a guide. The reason the tips you find here are general is because each and every individual site is different. Strategies that work well on one site may do poorly on another. Start with the basics in this guide. Stick with what works, and change what doesn’t.

Exercise Patience
Adsense is a finicky creature. There will be good days, and there will be bad days. Don’t change a successful design because you had one or two bad days. Experimentation is good, but you need to be patient so you don’t make things work. Allow at least a week (better yet several weeks) to measure changes before you change things again. Additionally, if you are starting a brand new site with Adsense incorporated, don’t expect to get rich quickly. There is no magic plan to make $1 million in a year. The first few months or even years will be hard work, and low profit. This will improve, if you continue working hard.

In Closing
Google’s Adsense program is a fantastic way to turn your websites from a hobby into a business. You can earn a fantastic income from the program, if you follow the simple rules in this guide, and you continue to work hard on your website.
